General Information

Our unique Russian Village is 300 km northeast of Saint Petersburg in the Podporoje district. It borders the Lodejnoje Polje district of the St. Petersburg region and the Republic of Karelia. The Svir river, one of the large navigable rivers of the St. Petersburg region, runs near the Village Mandrogi. The river connects Lake Ladoga and Onega. There are many clean rivers and lakes not far from our village. Pike, pike-perch, salmon, grayling and trout are some of the fish you will find in these waterways. The podporoje district is one cleanest ecological arease in the St. Petersburg region. This is due to the absence of industrial enterprises polluting the air and water. This district averages only one person per square kilometr. The main occupation of the residents in this area is the timber industry

The climate in the region avereages +20C, in the summtr and -15C in the winter the snow cover of 100cm. It is not uncommon to reach +30C in July and August and -30C in January and february. The autumn season avereage +10C and +12C during spring . The weather is unsteady in October and November. The snow covers the earth in November and the air temperature varies usually between 0C and -15C and seldom is up to +5C.

Vegetation: The district is located in the zone of European taiga and represents one of the most wooded area of the St. Petersburg region. The forests are mostly mixet but clean pinewoods (pine forest with white or long moss) occupy large areas. Fir woods with admixture of birch and asp trees are vast too and they are difficult to be crossed due to fallen trees after storm. Natural growing of birch, asp and fir-trees on places where they were entirely fallen is the excellent feed supply for elks but a human is hardly able to cross such area. All these factors and vast humanless lands are very picturesque for an European.

Wildlife: There are various animals in the district. Brown bear, wolf, fox, white hare, beaver, marten, mink, badger and squirrel are quite common.Occasionally you will find wild boar, lynx, moose (elk) and racoon dog. The population of grouse black, cock, hazel-hen are very numerous in the St. Petersburg region. The best season for hunting birds is in May and September and October.
